Google and FBI disrupt the NetNut/Popa residential proxy network.
Google said it worked with the FBI, Lumen, and other partners to disrupt NetNut, also known as Popa, a residential proxy network estimated by Google Threat Intelligence Group at at least 2 million devices worldwide. The company disabled Google accounts and services allegedly used for malware command-and-control and shared infrastructure intelligence with law enforcement and industry partners. Reuters reported that NetNut’s parent company, Alarum Technologies, said it was informed of FBI domain seizures and would cooperate with law enforcement. The case matters because residential proxy networks let criminals hide malicious traffic behind real consumer IP addresses, making password spraying, malware operations, and espionage harder to detect
