Brazil’s government suspects that a hacking attack caused an unauthorized alert to be sent to cell phones in several states early Saturday. The country’s National Protection and Civil Defense Secretariat said the public notification system was taken offline around 1:30 a.m. local time after a remote message containing the word “misanthropy” was sent. Authorities said the incident will be handed to the Federal Police for investigation, and the system will be restored after security checks.
